Churches find it difficult to maintain "open doors"
Risk assessment suggestions |
Advice is available from your insurer, National Church Watch
or your local Crime Prevention Officer. Whether responsible for a
cathedral or church, it is best to undertake a risk
assessment and devise appropriate security responses (We have
some risk assessment check sheets free of charge).
Ideally the
perimeter of the building would be secure with a monitored night time
alarm system. Daytime protection would should involve a reasonable
balance of staff and technology (perhaps CCTV and/or object
protection systems - electronics and physical e.g. rope barriers).
Staff (and volunteer) training and procedures are also very important.
Threats to staff, especially lone workers or
handling cash should be looked at. Careful consideration must be paid
to possible fire and water damage and emergency procedures.
Churches (unlike Cathedrals) are often unsupervised during the day.
This gives special problems. Alarms need to be a deterrent since a
covert alarm could risk people's safety.
